Dog clubs and kennel clubs occupy a unique space in web design — they need to communicate the warmth of a passionate community while operating with the professionalism of an organisation that manages registrations, events, and breed records at scale. For Orange Kannel Club, an affiliate of DogsNSW established in Orange, NSW in 1999, we designed and built a dog club website that achieves both.

The Dog Club Design Challenge
Kennel club websites often fall into one of two failure modes: they either look like community forums from the early 2000s, or they try so hard to look modern that they lose the warmth that makes dog clubs worth joining. Orange Kannel Club needed to avoid both.
The brief had three core requirements:
- Community first — New visitors should immediately feel that this is a welcoming, active dog community worth joining
- Credibility — As a DogsNSW-affiliated kennel club, the site needed to reflect the organisation's standing in the Australian dog breeding and showing community
- Functionality — 12,000+ members, 180+ dog breeds, and 500+ annual events needed to be navigable without confusion
Architecture for a Dog Breed Community
A dog club website serves multiple distinct audiences simultaneously: prospective members evaluating whether to join, existing members checking events and membership information, dog breeders researching breed standards, and dog show competitors looking for upcoming trials and competitions.
We designed a clear information architecture that gives each audience their primary entry point:
- Home — Value propositions and community snapshot for prospective members
- Breeds — Comprehensive breed directory for breeders and enthusiasts, covering Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, French Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers, and 176+ more
- Events — Dog show competitions, agility trials, and the annual event calendar
- Health & Care — Wellness resources, discounted veterinary care, and pet insurance programmes
- Membership — Clear benefits, pricing tiers, and join flow for prospective members
Design Language: Professional but Warm
The visual design language for a kennel club website needs to balance institutional credibility with community warmth. For Orange Kannel Club, we used:
Colour: A clean, professional palette with white as the dominant surface, dark text for readability, and accent colours that communicate warmth without being childish. The approach is closer to a premium community platform than a traditional dog show programme.
Typography: Clean sans-serif for navigation and interface elements, with slightly warmer display choices for headlines that reflect the community character of the club without sacrificing readability.
Photography direction: Dogs shown in natural, active contexts — at shows, in training, in the field — rather than studio-style product shots. The photography choice reinforces the active, engaged community the club represents.
Component structure: Cards for breed listings, clear event entries with dates and locations, and a membership section designed to convert interested visitors into registered members.
Kennel Club Website SEO Strategy
A dog club website competes in a specific search landscape — primarily against national kennel club directories (ANKC, DogsNSW), breed-specific community sites, and local dog training and boarding businesses. We structured the Orange Kannel Club site with:
- Breed-specific pages with comprehensive content about each registered breed — dog shows, temperament, care requirements — targeting searches like "kennel club breed registry Australia" and "registered dog breeders [breed name]"
- Event-optimised pages for dog show competitions and agility trials, targeting location-based searches
- Membership value content targeting searches from dog owners evaluating whether to join a kennel club
- Structured data for events and organisation schema, improving visibility in Google and Bing search results for dog show and community queries
Technical Implementation
Built on Next.js and deployed on Vercel, the Orange Kannel Club dog club website delivers:
- Sub-2 second load times on mobile — critical for dog show attendees checking schedules on-site
- Fully responsive across all screen sizes, from desktop research to mobile event lookup
- Static generation for breed and event pages — fast, reliable, and SEO-ready from day one
- Optimised image loading for breed photography across the 180+ breed directory
The deployment stack mirrors our approach on ZoningGraph and PayXara — Next.js for performance, Vercel for reliability, and a design system built for the client to extend independently.
The Outcome: A Dog Club Website Worth Joining
The Orange Kannel Club website launched as a platform that reflects the organisation's 25+ years of history and its active, engaged membership community. It communicates — in seconds — that this is a serious dog club with real events, a real breed programme, and a real community worth being part of.
For kennel clubs, regional dog clubs, and dog breed communities looking to build or rebuild their digital presence, this project demonstrates what a professionally designed and developed dog club website can achieve.
