When the Kansas City T-Bones came to us, they didn't need a designer to invent their vision. They already had it. They'd spent time crafting a detailed creative brief, fed it to ChatGPT with precision, and got back exactly the kind of logo they'd imagined.

The problem was the file.

The AI output was a small, pixelated JPEG. Impressive on a phone screen. Completely unusable in the real world where a minor league baseball identity actually has to live — on caps, jerseys, dugout signage, scoreboard graphics, and merchandise sold at the stadium.

They needed someone to take their vision and make it real.

The Client Brief

The Kansas City T-Bones are a Minor League Baseball team based in Kansas City, Kansas. Their identity brief was clear:

Team: Kansas City T-Bones Industry: Sport — Minor League Baseball Target audience: Value-oriented baseball fans who want the stadium to feel like an outdoor party or tailgate Visual direction: Bold, aggressive American sports identity — longhorn bull mascot, collegiate typography, red and navy palette, wide crest format

The concept they wanted was specific: a wide symmetrical crest built around a longhorn bull's frontal head, with "KANSAS CITY" on a red ribbon above and "T-BONES" as the dominant wordmark. Classic American sports iconography executed at an esports level of precision.

They wrote a detailed AI prompt to generate the concept. It worked. The concept image captured the vision perfectly.

Then they found out what it would take to actually use it.

The AI Prompt They Used

Client's ChatGPT / DALL·E Prompt

Create a bold, aggressive American sports team / football-style mascot logo for a team named "KANSAS CITY T-BONES." The finished artwork should be a perfectly centered, symmetrical, professional vector emblem with a strong collegiate / minor-league sports identity.

The overall silhouette should be built around the large frontal head of a powerful Texas longhorn bull, facing directly toward the viewer. The bull must have extremely wide horns extending horizontally to both sides, creating the dominant outer shape of the emblem. The horns should curve slightly downward near the center and then sweep upward/outward toward the tips. Build the horns using a white / very light cool gray main fill, dark navy internal negative spaces, and a thick pale gray outer keyline. Keep the horn construction angular, geometric, and highly stylized rather than realistic.

Place the bull's head in the lower central portion of the emblem, overlapping slightly beneath the typography. The bull should look intimidating, muscular, focused, and aggressive. Use a straight-on symmetrical face with narrowed white eyes, a broad forehead, heavy brow ridges, pronounced cheek structure, large ears extending sideways, and a wide squared muzzle. The nose and lower jaw should feel compact and powerful.

Construct the bull face from layered, sharp-edged vector shapes using primarily bright athletic red, deep crimson red, dark navy, white, and small pale-gray highlights. Use multiple red tonal shapes to create dimension across the forehead, brow, cheeks, bridge of nose, ears, and muzzle. Avoid gradients, photorealistic shading, textures, or soft effects. Every shadow and highlight should be created with clean solid-color shapes. Make the internal shapes angular and almost armor-like, similar to premium esports and American football mascot branding.

Above the bull head, create a huge condensed athletic wordmark reading: T-BONES

This should be the visual centerpiece of the logo. Use an extremely bold, tall, condensed varsity / block sports typeface with subtly chamfered or squared corners. Set the letters in solid white, with a subtle pale cool-gray offset shadow/detail visible mostly along the lower portions of the letters. Keep the lettering tightly spaced but clearly readable. The word should stretch across almost the full width between the horns.

Make the "T-BONES" typography slightly customized so it feels hand-built for the emblem rather than typed. Keep the "T" massive and dominant on the left, followed by a short hyphen and the remaining letters "BONES." Maintain thick vertical strokes and narrow counters. Keep the baseline visually horizontal and the total wordmark balanced around the central bull face.

Above "T-BONES," add a smaller red banner reading: KANSAS CITY

The banner should be a slightly arched / gently tapered horizontal ribbon positioned directly above the main wordmark. Use a vivid bright red fill. Shape the left and right ends into small angular downward-pointing tabs or ribbon cuts. The banner should visually follow the upper curvature of the emblem.

Set KANSAS CITY in uppercase white collegiate slab-serif / athletic lettering, generously tracked with clear spacing between letters. The text should be centered inside the red banner and feel classic American sports rather than modern corporate.

Surround the complete emblem with a thick pale cool-gray outer keyline, followed by dark navy interior spaces. The outline should trace the horn silhouette, top crest, side contours, and lower bull head. Above the red banner, add a subtle angular crown-like peak in the top center of the outer outline, giving the badge a shield / crest feeling without making it a conventional shield.

Colour palette:

  • Deep midnight navy: #001436 to #021536
  • Bright athletic red: #ED1917
  • Deep crimson shadow: #B90910
  • Highlight red / coral: #FF3433
  • Pure white: #F8F8F4
  • Cool pale gray outline: #CDD5D2

Maintain extremely strong bilateral symmetry. Keep the artwork flat vector, screen-print friendly, embroidery friendly, bold, highly legible, and scalable.

What the Rebuild Required

An AI mascot logo at this level of complexity is not a simple trace. This is what the rebuild involved.

The crest silhouette. The outer badge shape — with its wide horn-sweep silhouette, angular crown peak, and thick keyline system — was reconstructed as a precise vector path system. Every curve, every angle, every keyline weight was built with mathematical precision.

The bull head. The facial structure of the longhorn — forehead planes, brow ridges, eye shapes, cheek geometry, muzzle construction, ear positioning — was rebuilt as a stack of clean, closed vector shapes. No gradients. No raster texture. Every shade achieved through solid colour shapes, exactly as the brief specified and exactly as production printing requires.

The horn construction. The wide, sweeping horns are the dominant element of the crest. Rebuilding them meant constructing the main horn body, the dark navy shadow planes, the inner keyline, and the outer pale-gray outline as separate, precisely positioned paths that hold at any reproduction scale.

The "T-BONES" wordmark. The condensed varsity typography was rebuilt with custom letter-level adjustments — tightened spacing, a slightly chamfered baseline, and the subtle cool-gray shadow detail that gives the letters dimensional weight on dark backgrounds.

The "KANSAS CITY" ribbon. The arched red banner with its angular ribbon-tab ends was constructed as a geometric vector shape, with the white collegiate type set and spaced correctly inside it.

The colour system. The AI output approximated the palette. The vector rebuild specified it exactly — Pantone, CMYK, RGB, and hex values for every colour in the palette, so every printer, embroiderer, and supplier gets an identical result.
