Minimal branding is harder than it looks. When a brand strips away decoration, ornamentation, and complexity, what remains has to be perfect — because there is nowhere to hide imprecision.
Jowa needed a brand that operated at this level: clean enough to live in a product interface without adding visual noise, authoritative enough to anchor a marketing campaign, distinctive enough to be immediately recognisable.

The Design Approach
Minimum necessary complexity. Every element in the Jowa identity earns its place or it doesn't appear.
The mark is a geometric letterform — the initial, precisely constructed — with optical corrections applied at every curve and junction. Geometric fonts and AI-generated letterforms look slightly wrong because they apply mathematical perfection without human optical adjustment. We draw the letterforms by hand, making micro-corrections that the eye registers as "right" without being able to explain why.
The Mark
The Jowa lettermark is built on a modular grid with proportions derived from the golden ratio. The stroke weights are consistent throughout, with corner treatments that balance sharpness and approachability — authoritative but not harsh.
Critical decisions in the mark construction:
- Optical stroke compensation — certain joints in geometric letterforms appear thinner than their neighbouring strokes. We correct for this perceptually, not mathematically.
- Custom terminal treatments — the beginning and ending points of open strokes are designed, not defaulted
- Negative space proportion — internal white space is balanced to create visual rhythm, not just functional legibility
The System
Minimal systems require maximum discipline. Every decision in the Jowa brand system was made once and documented precisely:
| Element | Specification |
|---|---|
| Primary | #0A0A0A — near-black, not pure black |
| Background | #FAFAFA — warm white, not pure white |
| Typeface | Inter, weights Regular and Semibold only |
| Minimum logo size | 24px on screen, 8mm in print |
| Clear space | Equal to the cap-height of the wordmark |
The choice of near-black rather than pure black, and warm white rather than pure white, is intentional: it gives the brand a human quality that pure mathematical extremes do not have.
Digital-First Delivery
The Jowa brand was optimised specifically for digital-first deployment. The SVG was rebuilt to 1.2KB with clean semantic IDs. A React component with TypeScript types was delivered as part of the standard file set. The favicon was constructed as a separate, simplified mark that reads clearly at 16×16px.
Need a logo that works perfectly at every size?
We design minimal, precision-crafted logos built for digital-first brands — marks that perform from favicon to billboard without compromising on detail.
