NANO logo design — a brand identity project where the brief was encoded in the name itself. NANO means precision, miniaturisation, and technical exactness. The visual identity had to communicate all three, in a mark that would be equally at home at 16px on a digital interface and at full-bleed on a presentation cover.
The challenge with a four-letter brand name — especially one with strong conceptual weight — is avoiding the generic. Every design studio would look at NANO and immediately reach for the same toolkit: monospace font, dark background, maybe a subscript numeral. The goal was to find something more precise.

What makes the NANO identity distinctive?
The wordmark is built on a custom grid with tight typographic spacing — the kind of precision that reads immediately as intentional and considered. Key design decisions:
- Mathematical spacing — letter spacing and proportions derived from a grid, not set by eye
- Optical corrections — the standard typeface was modified at critical joints and terminals to achieve visual precision rather than just geometric accuracy
- Scale integrity — tested and refined at favicon, business card, and display sizes before finalisation

Business card design as a brand identity test
The business card was included as part of the NANO brand identity system — and for good reason. A business card is the most demanding application of a logo:
- It must work at 85 × 55mm with all essential information legible
- It must survive print production: bleed, trim, and stock selection
- It must hold up in the real world — the hand-held test that digital mockups cannot replicate
Designing the business card as part of the identity (not as an afterthought) ensures the logo has been stress-tested against its most demanding real-world application.

Logo design for precision-focused brands
NANO sits in a category of brands where the name communicates a promise of precision — and the visual identity must deliver on that promise before the product does. The typography is the message: if the letterforms are sloppy, the brand is sloppy. If the spacing is inconsistent, the precision claim is undermined.
This is the same principle applied to every logo we design — but it matters most for brands where precision is the product.
