Architecture firms are among the most demanding clients for brand design. A practice that designs spaces with millimetre precision expects the same standard from every element of their visual presence — including their logo.
ARKANE operates at the intersection of structural rigour and spatial poetry. The brand needed to communicate both: the mathematical precision of engineering and the considered sensibility of architecture as a design discipline.

The Typographic Approach
For an architecture practice, a typographic wordmark is often the strongest solution. It communicates that the practice's name — and therefore reputation — is itself the mark. There is nothing decorative. There is no illustrative shortcut. Just letterforms, drawn with precision.
The ARKANE wordmark was drawn entirely by hand — no off-the-shelf typeface applied and adjusted. Every letterform was constructed from first principles, referencing the proportional systems that underlie classical typographic design.
The Letterforms
The ARKANE wordmark uses a custom-drawn all-caps letterform with specific architectural references:
- Column proportions — the vertical strokes reference classical column proportions: slightly wider at the base, creating optical stability
- Precise serif treatment — the serif terminals are drawn with the same decision-making as a structural detail — functional and elegant simultaneously
- Optical spacing — the letter-pair relationships were individually adjusted for visual rhythm at both display and small print sizes
The A-R-K-A-N-E character sequence presents particular kerning challenges — the open geometry of A next to R, the K's diagonal strokes. Each pair was resolved individually.
Colour: Monochrome by Conviction
The ARKANE system uses black and white only. This is not a budget constraint — it is an aesthetic decision made with conviction.
Architecture practices that do high-quality work tend toward restraint in their branding. Colour can communicate energy and personality, but it can also date quickly. A timeless monochromatic system communicates that the practice is focused on the work, not the marketing.
The specific black used is not pure #000000 — it is #0A0A0A, a near-black with a barely perceptible warmth that prevents the brand from feeling harsh in print applications.
Applications
The ARKANE identity was delivered for the full range of architectural practice applications:
- Practice proposals and tender documents
- Business cards (uncoated stock, letterpress treatment)
- Stationery suite
- Digital presence and email signature
- Exhibition and portfolio presentation materials
