Adobe Firefly Export Formats: SVG, EPS, PNG and the Illustrator Workflow (2027)

Adobe Firefly generates AI images inside Creative Cloud — but the export formats it produces and what you can actually do with them in Illustrator are widely misunderstood. Here's a clear breakdown of every format, what it's actually good for, and how to get from Firefly output to a production-ready file.

What formats does Adobe Firefly export?

Adobe Firefly exports raster formats — primarily PNG and JPG. It does not natively export true vector formats like SVG or EPS. When you generate an image with Firefly inside Illustrator or Photoshop, what you receive is a raster image embedded in the document. To get a true vector SVG or EPS from Firefly output, you need to trace or rebuild the design as vector paths in Illustrator.

Can Adobe Firefly export SVG directly?

Not in the way most people assume. Firefly generates raster images. If you're working in Illustrator, you can save the document as SVG — but the Firefly-generated content inside it remains embedded raster data, not true vector paths. A document saved as SVG is not the same as a vector SVG. For a clean, scalable SVG with true vector paths, the Firefly output needs to be vectorized first.

What's the right workflow for using Adobe Firefly output in a logo project?

Generate concept in Firefly → use it as a reference direction, not a final file → rebuild the concept as vector in Illustrator using the pen tool or manual tracing → export clean SVG, EPS, AI, and PNG files from the rebuilt vector. The Firefly output is a starting point, not a deliverable. Production-ready logo files require vector rebuilding regardless of which AI tool generated the concept.

Here's the thing most people get wrong about Adobe Firefly.

Because Firefly lives inside Illustrator and Photoshop, the assumption feels logical: if you generate a logo concept here, the output should already be in a professional vector format.

It isn't. And understanding why — and what to do about it — changes how you use the tool entirely.


What Adobe Firefly Actually Generates

Firefly is an image generation model. Full stop.

What it produces is a raster image — made of pixels, at a specific resolution, with no inherent scalability. This is true regardless of which Creative Cloud application you're generating inside.

Generating with Firefly in Illustrator doesn't produce an Illustrator vector. It produces a raster image placed inside an Illustrator document.

Think of it this way: if you drag a JPEG into Illustrator and save the file as AI, you have an Illustrator file containing a JPEG. The JPEG is still a JPEG. It hasn't become vector. The same logic applies to Firefly-generated content placed in an Illustrator document.

This matters enormously for logo and brand work, where the end requirement is almost always a scalable vector file.


Adobe Firefly Export Formats: What's Actually Available

PNG — Firefly's primary export format. Raster, pixel-based, with transparent background support. A 2048×2048 PNG from Firefly is a high-resolution image file. It's suitable for web use, presentations, and on-screen display at intended size. It does not scale to billboard size without visible quality loss.

JPG — available in some Firefly workflows. Raster, no transparency support. Smaller file size than PNG. Used for photographic outputs, not logo or graphic work where transparency is needed.

What Firefly does NOT natively export:

True vector SVG — a Firefly image saved as SVG from Illustrator is an SVG document containing embedded raster data. The paths describing the design are not vector paths. The file is a container holding a raster image, labelled as SVG.

EPS — same issue. An EPS containing a raster Firefly output is a container format, not a true vector. It will not behave like a vector EPS when handed to a printer or sign maker.

AI (Adobe Illustrator native) — the Illustrator file contains the Firefly raster. The file format is AI; the content inside it is still raster.

This distinction is critical: the file format of the container (SVG, EPS, AI) does not determine whether the content inside is vector. Only properly traced or manually built paths are true vector.


The Raster vs. Vector Problem in Practice

Here's where this causes real problems.

A client generates a logo concept in Firefly. They love how it looks. They export it from Illustrator as an SVG. They hand it to a print supplier. The supplier opens it. It's embedded raster data — not scalable. The logo looks pixelated on the banner.

Or: the client uploads the "SVG" to their website. It displays fine at small sizes but looks blurry on retina screens. They wonder why.

Or: they ask a second designer to modify the logo six months later. The designer opens the file, selects the logo, and finds it's an embedded image — not editable paths. Starting from scratch.

None of these problems would exist if the Firefly output had been properly vectorized before delivery. What a vector file actually is explains the technical difference — it's worth understanding if you're working with Firefly output for brand use.


The Professional Workflow: Firefly to Production-Ready Files

Here's how the workflow actually looks when Firefly is part of a proper design process.

Step 1: Generate the concept

Use Firefly — via the Adobe Firefly web interface, Illustrator's Generative Fill panel, or Photoshop's Generate Image — to explore visual directions. At this stage you're generating ideas, not production files.

Think of a Firefly output the way you'd think of a rough sketch. It's a direction to develop, not an output to deliver.

Step 2: Place in Illustrator as a reference layer

The Firefly raster output goes into Illustrator as a locked reference layer. This gives you something to trace or build from. It is not the working artwork — it's a guide.

Step 3: Vectorize the concept

You have two options here.

Image Trace (faster, lower precision) — Illustrator's built-in Image Trace converts raster images to vector paths automatically. For simple, high-contrast designs with two to four colours, this produces usable vector output. For complex designs, photographic textures, or gradients, Image Trace produces messy paths that aren't suitable for professional use. You get vector technically — but not vector practically.

Manual vectorization (slower, professional quality) — a designer rebuilds the concept using the pen tool and shape tools, constructing clean vector paths from scratch using the Firefly concept as a reference. This produces the cleanest possible output. It also lets the designer refine and improve the concept as they build.

Step 4: Export the full production file set

Once the design is properly vectorized, export the complete professional file set: AI (source file), EPS, SVG, and PNG in multiple sizes with transparent background. These are now true production files.

SVG From Illustrator: What's Vector and What Isn't

This causes more confusion than anything else. Let's be precise.

When you export a file from Illustrator as SVG, the result is clean and true vector — if the content in the Illustrator document was created as vector paths.

If the Illustrator document contains an embedded raster image — from Firefly or any other source — that raster image is embedded in the SVG as base64-encoded data. The SVG file will be large. It won't scale cleanly at all resolutions. It won't work the way a vector SVG is expected to work in web or print contexts.

How to check in Illustrator: select the content in question. If the Properties panel shows "Linked File" or "Embedded Image" — it's raster. If it shows paths, groups, or compound paths — it's vector.

A clean SVG from Illustrator — with properly vectorized content — is infinitely scalable, small in file size, and editable in any vector tool. An "SVG" containing embedded raster data is none of those things.


EPS: When You'll Be Asked for It

EPS is an older format. Many newer designers never encounter it — until a print supplier, sign maker, embroidery company, or merchandise printer asks for it.

These suppliers ask for EPS because their production workflows — sometimes running on older prepress systems — expect it. They need actual vector paths to produce accurate results.

From Illustrator with properly vectorized content, an EPS export is clean and production-ready. From Firefly content that hasn't been vectorized, the EPS contains raster data. The supplier's system will either reject it or produce a pixelated result.

The rule is simple: vectorize first, export after.


PNG: Where Firefly Output Is Actually Useful As-Is

There are specific contexts where using the Firefly PNG export directly makes sense.

Concept presentation. Showing a client the visual direction you're exploring. A high-resolution Firefly PNG communicates the concept clearly enough for discussion and approval — provided the client understands this is a concept, not the final file.

Web mockups and wireframes. As a placeholder in a website design mockup — where the logo will be replaced with a proper vector before development — the PNG works fine.

Social media and digital at intended size. A 2048×2048 PNG at 72dpi displays sharply at most digital display sizes. For social media graphics and on-screen presentations, the Firefly PNG can work as a usable asset — as long as you're not scaling it beyond its native resolution.

What it cannot do: print at large scale, be modified or recoloured by another designer, be submitted as a logo file to a printer, be used as a favicon, be converted to embroidery or die-cut sticker format, or serve as a retina-sharp SVG on a website.

What files a designer should deliver covers the full professional file set required for proper brand use. A Firefly PNG alone satisfies very few of those requirements.


Why Designers Confidently Hand Over the Wrong Files

Here's why this confusion persists.

A designer generates a concept in Firefly. They open Illustrator. They export as SVG. They have an SVG file on their desktop. They believe they've delivered a vector file.

They technically have. They've delivered an SVG container with embedded raster content. The client won't know the difference until it causes a problem — at the printer, on the website, when the next designer tries to edit it.

This isn't always intentional. Many designers who haven't specifically worked with production files don't know the distinction. They equate "saved as SVG" with "is vector." The two are not the same.

If you're reviewing files from a designer who used Firefly, open the SVG in a text editor. A true vector SVG contains <path> elements with coordinate data. An SVG containing embedded raster data contains a <image> element with a long base64 string. That's how you know.


The Practical Bottom Line

Adobe Firefly is a useful concept generation tool. It is not a production asset generator for logo and brand work.

The output is always raster. The file format of the document you save it into — AI, SVG, EPS — doesn't change what's inside it. Production-ready brand files require vectorization.

The workflow that works: Firefly for concept exploration → manual vectorization in Illustrator for production quality → export clean AI, EPS, SVG, and PNG from the vector source.

Firefly within Illustrator — via Generative Fill or the Firefly panel — places the generated content directly into your Illustrator document as an embedded image layer. The core output is the same in both cases: raster. The Illustrator integration saves the step of manually placing the exported file, but neither produces native Illustrator vector paths.

For simple, high-contrast, limited-colour designs — often yes. Image Trace can produce clean enough paths for professional use when the design doesn't have photographic complexity, many gradient layers, or fine detail. For complex AI-generated imagery, Image Trace produces hundreds or thousands of messy paths that are technically vector but practically unusable. The test: after tracing, zoom in to 1000% and look at the paths. Clean, intentional curves are good. Thousands of tiny irregular paths are not.

Because Illustrator can save any document as SVG — and if someone generates with Firefly inside Illustrator and then exports as SVG, they technically have an SVG file. But the SVG contains embedded raster data, not vector paths. The confusion comes from conflating the container file format (SVG) with the content type (raster vs. vector). An SVG can contain either. A true vector SVG contains paths. A Firefly 'SVG' without prior vectorization contains raster.

For a website where the logo is displayed at a fixed size smaller than the Firefly output resolution — yes, a PNG can work temporarily. But an SVG is strongly preferred for web logos because it's infinitely scalable (sharp on retina displays at any size), smaller in file size than a large PNG, and can be styled with CSS. A proper web logo is always SVG. Firefly output used directly as a web logo will either be blurry on retina screens (if too small) or unnecessarily heavy on page load (if using the full resolution PNG).
